Who you are and what are your mediums?
Ricardo Pires. Visual artist working with objects, painting and video.
Explain your subjects/themes in 5 sentences.
My main subject is based on a personal research of the poetic image. This idea can be represented by the visual form of the Landscape. The development of my creative process oscillates between the real (visible) landscape and the inner (invisible or imaginary) landscape. My work is driven by observation and awareness, so I’m bound to the invisible forces affecting things and to the transformational power of the artistic image.
What is your background?
I have studied arts in highschool and have degrees in Industrial Design and Fine Arts.
What role does The Artist have in society?
A very prominent role, in that the artist stirs the acceptance of change and different ways of seeing reality through the aesthetic experience.
How has your practice changed over time?
My practice is animated by a persistent need for experimentation and discovery; this trait hasn’t changed much over time.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I have had side jobs in set design in the film industry (mostly cinema and tv), as a surf school manager and instructor, as a freelancer in graphic design and page layout, among others such as working in bars or surf stores.
What film, music or book has inspired you?
Film: “The Sacrifice” - Andrei Tarkovsky/ Music: Mozart’s “Requiem” / Book: “Difference and Repetition” - Gilles Deleuze
