Raoul Kurvitz

Known for his installations, performances, paintings, and objects, Raoul Kurvitz's artistic creations have garnered recognition in prestigious European and American museums and institutions. His video and music creations have been highly appreciated, adding another layer of depth to his body of work.

Born on February 3, 1961, he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts as an architect in 1984, now he’s one of the biggest names in the Estonian art scene since the ‘80s.
He created a group Rühm T with his classmate Urmas Muru in 1986, soon joined architect Peeter Pere together with other artists and creative people. Rühm T called their creations cold expressionism, which lacked passion, was distant but still intervening. Kurvitz’ has created installations, performances, paintings, videos and musical pieces.
He represented Estonia for the first time at the Venice Biennale in 1997 together with Jaan Toomik and Siim Tanel Annus. His large-scale personal exhibition “Symphony si-bemol minor. Postapocalyptic” could be seen at Tallinn Art Hall and in front of it on the Freedom Square in 1999. In 2013 a review of his creative life path took place at Kumu Art Museum.

Vano Allsalu

Primarily recognized as an abstract painter, Vano Allsalu's solo exhibitions in Estonia date back to 1984. His artworks have been displayed in overview exhibitions since 1985. Allsalu's works can be categorized into three types, each showcasing his unique artistic vision and experimentation. Notably, his works belonging to the third type provide viewers with a captivating experience resembling a tourist's mobile phone video transmission from an airplane.

Külli Suitso

With a diverse portfolio including oil painting, graphic art, and video, Külli Suitso is an artist from Estonia currently residing in Denmark. She has exhibited her works in various countries, allowing her artistic expressions to reach a global audience. Suitso's art can be found in esteemed collections such as the Matti Milius collection, Loviisa Town Museum in Finland, and Uppsala City Council in Sweden, among others.

Katrin Rüütli

Hailing from Tartu, Estonia, Katrin Rüütli graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts and specializes in painting. Her artistic work merges realistic motifs with imaginative landscapes, exploring the intricate relationship between photography and digital image editing. Isi Trapido's most renowned photo, "Speed," has been turned into a limited edition NFT series in collaboration with his son Toomas Trapido and artist Ave Teeääre. This exclusive series features a total of 15 unique pieces, which will be available only on Kanvas.ai. To learn more about the series, you can join the upcoming webinar on April 25th.

Isi Trapido was a professional photographer who captured thousands of historic events and people in sports and culture. His most famous photo, "Speed," depicts Olympic gold medalist Ants Antson during training. This photo captures both the speed and the face of the skater at the same time, making it a remarkable photo from its era.

Now, Isi Trapido's most awarded photo has been transformed into a series of animations that come in three color tones: original, warm, and cold. Each NFT showcases the skater completing two laps in the rink, with the Olympic gold medal appearing at the end of the last lap. NFTs depicting the start and finish of the competition are paired with a physical print of "Speed," signed and numbered by Toomas Trapido and including a copy of Isi Trapido's author stamp.

Another exciting development in the NFT world is the upcoming release of the "Speed" NFT series by Isi Trapido. Using the original award-winning photo, "Speed," Isi Trapido's son Toomas Trapido and artist Ave Teeääre have created a limited series of 15 animations.

Each animation depicts the skater doing two laps in the rink, with three different color tones available. The NFTs depicting the start and finish of the competition come with a physical print of "Speed," signed and numbered by Toomas Trapido, and a copy of Isi Trapido's author stamp.

The volume of Estonian auction galleries has been constantly increasing over the past few decades, with the biggest increase occurring during the recent social crises. The Art Index provides an adequate overview of what is happening in the Estonian classical art market, which works and artists are the most valued in public sales, how the price of art has risen over time, and how the volume of auction works has changed over time.

The Estonian art index has been created based on information from the public auctions of Estonia's largest art galleries over the past 20 years, including HAUS gallery, Vaal gallery, Allee gallery, E-art salon, and Vernissage gallery. It is free of charge and provides a sense of security to those who want to invest in art, but feel insecure in the art world.

One of the goals of the Art Index is to be a tool for people who want to invest in art which is a big asset class. The index can be compared to a stock index or a real estate index, as it shows how the art market is constantly changing, how the prices of works of art have changed over time, what is the value of the works of a particular artist at the current time, and what is the volume of the art market.

In the near future, we are planning to launch an European index and a dedicated index for NFT art as well, which would give buyers a sense of security that they are really buying a quality piece that has value on the secondary market. Initially, we’ll start collecting NTF art information from the sales of NFTs created on the Tezos’ blockchain which take place through the Kanvas.ai environment.

At Kanvas.ai, we are also working to ensure that contemporary art, young art, and young artists also reach the art index. Our idea is for the art index to be self-complementary and become a tool for all active galleries who want to add their sales to the database. In this case, young artists would become more visible.

We highly recommend considering investments in young artists as it may entail greater risk; however, it also presents the potential for higher returns.

It is also worth noting that art is not only a monetary investment, but it also holds significant sentimental value, rendering it a complex and fascinating market.

It's important to note that investing in art, like any other asset class, has its downsides. One of the main drawbacks is the high cost of entry, making it difficult for many people to invest in. Additionally, art is not a liquid asset, meaning that it can be challenging to sell quickly if needed. It's also essential to consider art as a long-term investment.

To address these issues, Kanvas.ai is exploring Fractional Investment, a concept that allows investors to purchase a fraction of an artwork, making art investment accessible to a wider range of people.

What are your mediums?

All available, but mainly: paper, ink, gold, watercolours, gel pens, acrylic paints.

Explain your subjects/themes in 5 sentences.

Abstract art.  I don't draw in a particularly planned way, flow guides my hand.  When I sit down to work on something, it usually arises spontaneously from the first move.  It's pure emotion.  I never wanted to imitate reality, only to process it.  We currently have other tools to show the real world: photography and film - I leave it to these tools. 

What is your background?

I do not have any particular artistic education; I completed my university degree in business, specifically in management and banking.  My background is my family home where my parents taught me how to be open to the world of art.  Then 20 years of creating video, television and film projects completed the whole picture. 

What role does The Artist have in society?

The artist shows the world to the people in a way that they themselves may not see it.  It suggests a change of perspective.  It often makes you more open and sensitive to new sensations/experiences. 

How has your practice changed over time?

I don't know how other artists feel about it, but each of my works was a pretext for another one.  After making dozens, I don't see the end of this process and I don't know where it will lead me.  I started with white on black and now I'm painting black on white.  These works are arranged in short cycles, because I am always curious about what will happen next.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I was a TV and film director and producer. 

What film, music or book has inspired you? 

There are too many to pick just one title or a movie.  Music is most important to me and there is one piece that really changed my life and that was Mozart's Requiem, many years ago. 

What would you like to do better?

Everything.

Should art be funded? 

It would be great, because an artist should do art and create, and not earn money elsewhere to be able to create. 

Where was your last exhibition? 

I had no exhibitions yet.  I started my painting during Covid, then there was the war in Ukraine – it was difficult to get my head around it.  

When did you realize that you wanted to be a full timeartist? 

I'm not a full-time artist.  This is my hobby, which takes up a very large part of my spare time. 

What is your dream project?

Make my works into the form of huge sculptures.  Move some work into 3D. 

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Don't learn to draw, draw from inside yourself. 

Professionally, what’s your goal?

Future will show.

What are your thoughts about AI art?

 I am not a supporter of the lack of a human element in art.  In any kind of art.

Use social media platforms wisely

It's also crucial to use social media platforms wisely. 

While social media can be an excellent way to showcase your artwork, it's important to be mindful of the platform's terms and conditions. You should ensure that you're not giving away your rights to your work and disable the right-click option on your artwork, making it harder for others to download your images.

Keep track of your artwork

Keeping track of your artwork is another crucial aspect of protecting it. You should maintain a record of all your work, including the date it was created and where it has been displayed. This will help you prove ownership if someone tries to use your work without your consent.

Consider using digital fingerprinting

Finally, consider using digital fingerprinting to embed a unique identifier in your artwork. This identifier is invisible to the naked eye but can be detected by software. If your artwork is used without your permission, you can use this identifier to prove ownership and take legal action.

Exclusive Collection: "Traces"

"I travelled around Estonia for two years and captured places that were important to me for our concert. Along with filming, it seemed logical to also portray these places, and that's how the exhibition "Traces" was born alongside the film. 15 works are exhibited, forming an independent whole," says author Kaupo Kikkas about his work. and adds: "For me, these photos are like the backbone of the entire Traces show. The most important thing for me is that these works are like stills from a movie - we only see a momentary capture in the photo, but in our head the shots that precede and follow them unfold and thus sum up something much bigger."

Audiovisual concert "Traces" by Erki Pärnoja and Kaupo Kikkas

"Traces" came to me during the first corona wave lockdown," explains Pärnoja. "For weeks, maybe even months, I was at home, but I consistently went "away" somewhere in my mind, with my head full, sometimes at the computer, sometimes at various instruments, searching for a certain sound.

"When did you write all this?" wondered my wife Anna, when I played "Traces" for her for the first time. Some time later, in the spring of 2021, while walking in the Kilingi-Nõmme forest, where I had been many times, I got hopelessly lost. Suddenly, I understood why I needed to receive and write down "Traces" at that time."

Erki invited Kaupo to translate his music into a visual language.

"Sight is an immensely powerful sense. Therefore, in the combination of music and image, you have to treat the music with special respect, let it resonate," says Kaupo Kikkas. "My black-and-white pictorial language "Traces" speaks gently, slowly, and indirectly, sometimes even without saying anything. It allows our senses to wander into uncharted territory and find something missing from the real world for some reason. We see the consequence but not the event itself. "Traces" take shape behind each person's eyelids in a different way.

On February 23, 2023, experience the release of "Traces" in a live performance at the Alexela Concert Hall, featuring Erki Pärnoja and his ensemble, along with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, with Kaupo Kikkas' art film displayed on the screen. Physical Exhibition "TRACES" at SOLARIS GALLERY

From Saturday, February 18, Kaupo Kikkas's new exhibition will be open in SOLARIS Gallery. The exhibition depicts places spiritually crucial to him, captured during the last two years. The Kikkas’ exhibition taking place at SOLARIS Gallery is part of the larger joint project "TRACES" created together with Erki Pärnoja. The collaborative project combines Erki's music and Kaupo’s film and photo material.

The exhibition will remain open until February 27, and it ends with a conversation evening between Erki Pärnoja and Kaupo Kikkas, where you can hear the stories behind the creation of the music and visuals directly from the authors.

Solaris gallery is located at Rävala boulevard 12, next to the main entrance of the Alexela concert hall.
